Christmas ‘Festival of Lights’ 2018

inSwindon BID Company Ltd launches its spectacular Christmas ‘Festival of Lights’ set to illuminate the town centre with bursts of colour and activities.

inSwindon BID are delighted to be hosting the free ‘Festival of Lights’ which is its largest Christmas campaign to date. The festival kicks off with the annual light switch on, taking place on Saturday 17th November and will be headlined by the most popular British urban artist of this generation - Tinchy Stryder.

With over 1 million in sales, Tinchy is one of the UK’s most successful rappers of all time and has collaborated with artists such as N-Dubz and Pixie Lott, as well as being a popular TV personality appearing on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! and Celebrity Juice. Tinchy continues to release new music and perform at some of the world’s biggest events and festivals and also featured on the BBC’s Eight Go Rallying in Saigon earlier this year.

Headline act, Tinchy Stryder said “I can’t wait to be joining Swindon to kick off their Festival of Lights switch-on! See you all on the 17th November in Wharf Green from 5pm!”

The official main stage goes live from 5.00pm in Wharf Green, featuring local performers including The Voice Kids finalist 2018 Lilia Slattery, Swindon’s ‘Tap Attack’ from Britain's Got Talent 2018, Phoebe Maddison from The Voice Kids 2018, Swindon’s Got Talent winner, Nathaniel Parker and our very own local Swindon Dance.

The Voice Kids finalist, Lilia Slattery said ‘I’m really excited to be performing at this year’s Christmas light switch on. I had so much local support whilst I was on the Voice Kids, so it will be really nice to be able to perform locally again and give something back!’

Heart Breakfast’s Ben and Mel will once again host the main event, joined by children’s host ‘Jack Frost’ who will be sure to bring festive fun and mayhem to the main stage.

At 6.00pm a dramatic firework finale is planned to light up the sky above the town centre, before crowds head off to take advantage of the great variety of bars and restaurants including the Regent Circus complex where Nando’s, Tiffins, Prezzo, Ask Italian and Coals are sited; The Crossing inside the Brunel Shopping Centre where you’ll find Triple 222 coffee, McCTaffs, Chopstix Noodle Bar, Eggelicious and much more - or why not try the Bridge Street and Fleet Street venues such as Boston Brothers, Sir Daniels, The Waiting Room, The Grove Company Inn, Subway or Roosters.

Throughout the day, visitors and families can enjoy free entertainment including our Christmas bouncing elves all the way from the North Pole and the mesmerising Glo Hula Hooping dancer, as well as the much-loved Santa’s Grotto and the new Santa’s Post Office at The Brunel Shopping Centre.

The icing on the Christmas cake is this year’s artisan market which will be in the town centre on the Light Switch On day and on various other dates in November and December. The Anonymous Travelling Market

is heading to Swindon town centre offering stalls including seasonal gifts and decorations, vintage goods, traditional Christmas fayre, arts and crafts and regional produce.

The town centre’s Festival of Lights will continue through to the end of December and will also feature:

  • A light trail of 3D and LED Christmas light installations, including a 4-metre-high interactive teddy bear for visitors and families to enjoy.
  • Free events every weekend in the run up to Christmas, which will include a Christmas Mariachi Band, interactive Christmas Bauble photo booth and LED Dancing Drummers.

inSwindon Chief Executive, Di Powell, said ‘Our Christmas Experience is a fantastic way to kick off the festive season. We deliver many free events all year round, but this one’s certainly our favourite! We are so excited by the amazing activities planned across the town centre and the talented acts joining us on the main stage. It doesn’t end there - our spectacular interactive light trail is a first for the town centre and visitors are in for a real treat this Christmas.’

The Festival of Lights begins on Saturday 17th November until 31st December 2018.
