Independent Retailer Month is an annual campaign which runs throughout July. It highlights the important role of smaller, local, independent retailers in communities, local economies, and the entire retail sector.
Swindon town centre currently boasts 28% independent retailers – that's 140 retailers which offer something unique or diverse.
In the current economic climate, with a nationwide movement in high street closures, inSwindon BID is reminding visitors and residents that the town centre is open for business. And although Swindon will be affected by future closures of some high street stores, these communities can celebrate Independent Retailer Month by supporting local businesses and continuing to #ShopLocalSwindon.
Di Powell, inSwindon BID CEO commented: “It’s a challenging time for all town centres, not just Swindon, and it’s why we recognise the value our independent retailers bring to our town centre. Swindon ranks better than the national average for vacancy rates, and this is down to its volume of independent retailer which add value to the place we work, live and enjoy.”
Many of the independent retailers in Swindon town centre have been trading for several years and know there is still a place for them on our high streets.
Alan Holmes, of Holmes Music on Faringdon Road, has been trading in Swindon for 56 years. He said this about supporting the future of the high street. “I’m Swindon born and bred. Swindon is very much a part of me, and I believe as a community we should support independent retailers because they have such a prominent place on our high streets. As an independent retail community, we have the ability to engage with the local community by offering people something unique.”
In support of Independents Retailers Month, inSwindon BID recognises the number of retailers who take advantage of the Swindon Town Centre Loyalty Club. With more than 80 retailers providing over 100 different offers for visitors to the town centre demonstrates how schemes such as the Loyalty Club, can support the promotion of town centre businesses.
The Loyalty Club, managed by inSwindon BID, is hugely successful with 94% of business offers redeemed in the last 12 months. Not a Loyalty Club Member and want to know more?
