Gone are the days when a visit to the theatre was just about taking your seat for a performance.

The auditorium has 635 seats and every seat is designed to be no further than 70ft from the stage. The venue offers a mixed programme of concerts, comedy, dance, drama, musical theatre and local amateur productions. The Wyvern Theatre has a vibrant team of 30 staff members and an additional 30 front of house members.

History of the Wyvern Theatre

The Wyvern Theatre opened in September 1971 by Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Phillip.

The Wyvern Theatre is named after a mythical beast, similar to a dragon, which was once thought to be the emblem of the Kings of Wessex.

In 2007, multidisciplinary artist and designer Gudrun Sigridur Haraldsdottir was invited to create a striking contemporary installation for the exterior of the Wyvern Theatre. His piece, entitled Link, acts as a contrasting, moving current to the architecture’s large static exterior surfaces, connecting the interior essence of the building - it’s creative activities - to its prominent exterior and creates a fresh and welcoming invite to Wyvern Theatre.
