Swindon's Town Centre is home to one of the most modern libraries in the whole of the UK - and truly a library for the 21st century.

Swindon Central Library has three floors of books - 77,000 of them in all - and a whole lot more besides. There's a stylish cafe on the ground floor, for a start, with furniture that seems to have been built specifically with the idea of winding down with a novel or a newspaper and a cup of coffee. It's open seven days a week.

Costing £10million and featuring no less than 60 free-to-use computers with internet access, the library also houses the impressive Swindon Collection, which is a mouth-watering treasure trove for anybody interested in browsing local history.

And just to underline the surprising way in which a library - of all places - has become a magnet for people taking a break from shopping or work during the daytime, there is always a programme of events to tempt in people of all ages.

You could almost say the place has written a new chapter into the social life of Swindon.

The library is also home to the Visitor Information Centre; which provides fantastic services for those eager to soak up every last drop of information within Swindon.
