This is an exciting opportunity to join our vibrant PLACE making Team working to help shape the Borough and secure net biodiversity gains across strategic allocations and through key Council projects.

If you are a team player looking for a fulfilling career move to work within a supportive and friendly working environment with other specialists including Planners, Urban Designers, Conservation and Arboricultural Officers and Landscape Architects, this could be the role for you. We are seeking a proactive and experienced Senior Ecologist to help our team of professionals bring forward sustainable development and influence projects across the Borough.

Swindon is a vibrant and dynamic town with big plans for growth. We are ranked in the top 10 most highly innovative areas in the UK and are investing in our Planning Teams to ensure we can continue to plan positively to deliver our targets and secure enhancements in our environment.

We are looking to appoint a qualified (CEnv) experienced member of the CIEEM, (or similar), with the skills and motivation to help us deliver our ambitious goals. This role provides a great opportunity for a pragmatic individual with a ‘can do’ attitude to be part of a strong, dynamic team, working collaboratively on exciting projects and developments with colleagues across the Council, partner organisations and developers. The work is varied, fulfilling and rewarding and the successful candidate will take a lead role in providing expert advice and driving all aspects of ecological input to projects including the managing of contracts and contractors.

Expert knowledge of all relevant environmental law including EIA Regulations, Habitats Regulations, the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) and the UK Biodiversity Action Plan is essential and experience of their application within local government and particularly within the planning system is highly desirable. An ability to travel throughout the Borough and sometimes beyond to undertake site visits and attend meetings is also essential and candidates must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act – for the effective performance of a customer-facing role).

We feel a work life balance is important for our team members. As such Swindon operates flexible working and you will have the opportunity to work from home. The working hours and pattern for this role may be negotiable for the right candidate.
