#ShineOnSwindon - Town Centre Caretaker recognised for inspirational work

inSwindon BID Caretaker, Freddy Frankland, has been recognised by the town centre businesses for his dedication and hard work.

Vince Ayris, independent business owner on Havelock Street for more than 35 years, contacted inSwindon BID to share his and his fellow business owners’ admiration for Freddy's work and to present him with an award.

Vince believes the broader community should be made aware of Freddy's dedication and commitment to keeping the town centre clean and tidy. He says, "This has been a difficult time for town centre businesses, and despite it being significantly quieter, Freddy has diligently kept up with the maintenance. It is something we have certainly very much appreciated in Havelock Street."

The Town Centre Caretaker role plays an integral part of inSwindon BIDs five-year business plan, for a clean and well-maintained town centre. Anita Bellinger, inSwindon BID Manager said, “I am really proud of Freddy, the award is very well deserved, and it is absolutely wonderful that his work has been thoughtfully recognised by our BID businesses. It is a tough and relentless job, but Freddy undertakes the task industriously and with real tenacity. I have been so grateful to the entire BID team over the last year, they have worked incredibly hard throughout these challenging times to support our town centre and visitors.”

As a mark of this, and on behalf of the town centre business community, Vince wanted to reward Freddy as a way of saying thank you. He continues, " Freddy always goes above and beyond, and it is for that reason we believe he should receive this recognition. He takes great pride in his job, and that reflects in the appearance of the town centre, and for that reason, we want to say thank you!"

#ShineOnSwindon Campaign Launched to Welcome Back Town Centre Businesses

inSwindon BID have launched #ShineOnSwindon, which is a new campaign in support of all businesses across the town centre that have remained open throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and have since reopened. inSwindon BID and Swindon Borough Council Unite to Promote Public Health Messaging and #ShineOnSwindon Campaign

inSwindon BID and Swindon Borough Council have today launched a series of lamppost banners designed to support the #ShineOnSwindon supporting local businesses created by the BID back in June and Swindon Borough Council’s new town-wide communications campaign, ‘Swindon: It’s up to all of us’, which launched on 12th August to reinforce a number of important public health messages to Swindon residents.

A total of twenty-eight colourful banners are now on display to promote the key messages across each campaign and the series features across Regent Street in the town centre, Great Western Way, Queens Drive, Drakes Way, the Magic Roundabout and Wootton Basset Road.

Anita Bellinger, Business Manager at inSwindon BID said, “Our visual #ShineOnSwindon campaign has been so well received by the businesses and public alike since June. The banner series is one of many visual projects we have been working on for the town centre and we are grateful for the opportunity to spread the message far and wide, with the support of Swindon Borough Council. Right now, the message of #SupportLocal is more important than ever.”

The lamppost banners will also promote Swindon Borough Council’s new‘Swindon: It’s up to all of us’ communications campaign, which urges all individuals in the town to play their part in minimising the spread of covid-19 and keep themselves and the community safe. In the first week alone 1,000 residents shared an update social media post from the council on the current situation, which reached over 85,000 people - showing the Swindon community is keen to help spread the word.

Councillor Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Town Centre, said: “Our ‘Swindon: It’s up to all of us’ covid awareness campaign is helping to keep Swindon out of a new lockdown. These banners will remind people that shopping locally is important more than ever now, and provides useful key messages to help stop the spread of coronavirus. It is only by working with the community, and key partners, such as inSwindon, that we will keep people safe and businesses open.”

inSwindon BID create #ShineOnSwindon Mural Experience

inSwindon BID have today unveiled a unique mural experience as part of their welcome back campaign, #ShineOnSwindon, which aims to support businesses across the town centre.

The Mural Experience has been created at Swindon Bus Station. At a total of 132ft across 4 walls, it can also be seen from Newbridge Square and features the #ShineOnSwindon identity, as well as unique landscapes from day to night using a combination of paint and spray paints.

Anita Bellinger, Business Manager said, “We’re excited to be bringing more visual experiences to the town centre in support of our businesses. The Mural Experience has created an area of interest in the town centre that we hope visitors will enjoy and share via their social channels using the hashtag #ShineOnSwindon. We hope to build on this in the future as we continue to support our businesses.”

The Mural Experience was designed and created by local Artist, Peter Cowdy and Dayna Baxter. Peter has created murals, models and designed internationally completing commissions for community groups, independent businesses, museums, local authorities, and multinational companies.

Dayna is a self-taught Abstract Artist, specialising in hard-edge geometric pattern and shape work. His work is a marriage of bright bold colours and geometric shapes that aim to bring life and joy to any area and the observer.

Peter Cowdy, said, “When looking at the space and what the BID were trying to achieve across the four walls, we devised the theme of the whole area to involve mirroring to opposites. Day to night for instance and then the wise owl and the courageous lion. We really hope people enjoy what we’ve created to support the campaign.”

inSwindon BID launched the visual and digital campaign, #ShineOnSwindon to support the businesses and drive footfall safely into the town centre since lockdown was eased back in June.

#ShineOnSwindon with Swindon's Buses

The inSwindon BID #ShineOnSwindon campaign which launched on 23 June, welcomes businesses back into the town centre with a window decal star filled with colour as a symbol of support. As part of the ongoing campaign, inSwindon BID has been engaging with local bus companies Swindon’s Bus Company and Stagecoach.

Chairman of inSwindon BID Ian Larrard joined General Manager of Swindon’s Bus Company and inSwindon BID Board Member, Alex Chutter, to welcome six new 20 plate buses into the town centre with the decal star at their Swindon depot. Back in the town centre, Street Ambassador Kev Saunders, met up with Bill McCartney Operations Manager, Stagecoach Swindon, to thank them for keeping passengers safe when travelling by bus into the town centre.

Alex Chutter, commented on the #ShineOnSwindon campaign: “Swindon’s Bus Company plays a major role in getting people in and out of the town centre safely. Face coverings on public transport has been mandatory since 15 June, the same date non-essential retailers opened. It’s by working in conjunction with organisations such as inSwindon BID, that we can help boost the confidence in people returning to some normality, and that starts by supporting our local economy. The #ShineOnSwindon campaign has done a fantastic job in raising the profile of businesses within the town centre, demonstrating that they are ready and open. As a company we are proud to display these stars on our new 20 plate buses and be a part of a much wider campaign.”

Bill McCartney shared on his support for the campaign: “Buses have remained a vital link for people across Swindon and Wiltshire throughout lockdown and we are proud of the part we have played in enabling key workers to travel to work using our network. Since lockdown restrictions have begun to gradually ease, it's been great to see more and more people returning to our services for both work and leisure journeys. Our customers want to be confident of their health and safety when they step onto one of our buses and I'd like to reassure them that every day, we are taking steps to ensure that our buses are as clean as they have ever been. We’re delighted to be a part of the #ShineOnSwindon campaign as it raises the awareness of how as a community, we’re working together for the safety and wellbeing of people travelling to and from the town centre.”

Ian Larrard identified the need for collaboration within businesses across the town centre: “I’m delighted by the success of the #ShineOnSwindon campaign. I have been out to several businesses myself have now broadened our reach of the campaign by displaying the stars within some of the buses that service the town centre and we would like to thank Swindon Bus for their support.

They have done a fantastic job of keeping public transport moving during the pandemic, allowing key workers to carry out their vital roles in keeping us safe. It has been a challenging time, but I believe through the support networks available, and by businesses working in collaboration, we will continue to increase consumer confidence.”

The window decal star is the first part of the new #ShineOnSwindon campaign from inSwindon BID and over the coming months visitors to the town centre can expect to see a variety of visual, digital and virtual experiences launching on the lead up to Christmas.
