Swindon Town Centre Mini Art & Culture Festival a Great Success
The first of this year’s Mini Arts & Culture Festivals, introduced by inSwindon BID, brings a welcomed ray of sunshine and to Swindon Town Centre.
Anita Bellinger, inSwindon Executive Director says, “This weekend we introduced the first of this year’s Mini Art & Culture Festivals; it was wonderful gathering together some of Swindon’s gifted Artistic groups and individuals to celebrate all things creative in Swindon Town Centre. We were blessed with fabulous weather, and as the sun shone down festival fun was certainly enjoyed by all, adults and children alike. It was really lovely to see so many people laughing and smiling again. The idea behind the initiative was to safely showcase Swindon’s amazing artistic and creative talents, outside in an open urban space, accessible for all. Fantastic pieces of artwork from Swindon Museum & Art Gallery were exhibited, via their inspirational Art on Tour enterprise, alongside real time art sessions delivered by the inspiring grassroots art organisation Artsite. A Makers Market, Totally Crazy portrait selfies and children’s craft actives from super talented Sue Bardwell, were amongst other great successes. I was also delighted that this weekend saw our inSwindon Mother Nature and Flower of Hope mural in Wharf Green joined by three other murals in the Town Centre - Artiste’s dynamic young Artists HOPE mural, Regent Circus’ Wildlife mural by Martin Travers and Lionel Stanhope, and the start of the incredibly talented Peter Cowdy and Karen Koh’s new image in Princes Street. We have so much exciting creative talent in the Town Centre it has been an honour to share some of it, and with all the positive feedback from the community that we have had, we will be able to build and shape our next mini festival.”
“The mini-festival provided a unique opportunity for Art on Tour to share Swindon’s art collection with so many people in one place! It was brilliant to be part of such a vibrant, buzzing atmosphere, and contribute to the culture and creativity offer in the Town Centre. We had a fun time chatting to people about the artworks on show, from those who know the collection well to those who haven’t managed to make it up to Swindon Museum and Art Gallery before!” Katie Ackrill, Swindon Museum & Art Gallery.
Sally Taylor from Artsite also commented, “ Artsite had a fantastic time taking part in the InSwindon Art Festival over the weekend. The weather was glorious, and it was lovely seeing so many people face to face at our events. A great way to move out of lockdown and into summer.”

#GrowSwindon - Local Artist, Peter Cowdy shares his inspiration behind the new Wharf Green Mural.
"When initially approached about most jobs, I wonder where, when or how inspiration for a design will come and go through a mix of feelings as an idea develops from discussion to image.
InSwindon suggested a brief of, growth at our initial meeting and I found that the location itself started to fill in some of the ideas for me.
The silver birch planted alongside the multistory car park seemed to cry out for perspective to be added behind them creating the illusion of depth and suggesting an abundant woodland. The beautiful grey/brown/green of the weathered car park cladding seemed like the perfect choice of colours to use for part of the murals design, that would help the finished painting blend in with it's surround.
When starting sketches I knew we needed central focus areas and an effective background to support and compliment each other.
The idea to paint a mother nature inspired character is definitly a reflection of how I feel about the planet as a living entity which we are part of and whom supports us all and equally needs our support like any healthy, loving relationship. Also conveniently the aforementioned cladding colours would look great as a giant tree skinned woman.....
Painting the flower of life, is again a reflection of my personal feeling and preference and I felt would be a perfect way to illustrate the magic of creation and growth. The pattern of circles to me, suggests cell division as well as forming the base of how shapes and patterns create the most complex of forms as well as new dimensions.
The final key element of the design came about through pressure to get initial sketches over for when I had promised! Other than the idea of woodland I did not really know how we would present the large area of background. Looking at old reference photos I noticed some beautiful effects from soft focus and blurred photography and felt like they would be an effective way to create the depth required from the background without requiring a lot of high detail painting.
My reference photo search brought more choice to the table as the seasonal colours where all so exciting. Why make a choice when all four seasons can be used, this also fit perfectly with the theme of growth and was the final element in the design to fall into place.
Over the last year or so, most of our routines and daily choices have been bought under the spotlight of change and I have taken opportunity to discover and appreciate parts of the town I had not connected with before. This change in pace and deepening of my love of the area has been an opportunity to think of the local area (ultimately the world) and how it bonds us all through our own connections with it."

Artist Peter Cowdy commented on his inspiring Mother Earth with Flower of Life mural, “I have loved painting this wall and particularly enjoyed the theme of growth which fits perfectly at Wharf Green, surrounded by trees! We have been overwhelmed by the support we received from passers-by, as well as the local pigeon population who sang to us all week. A special thanks to inSwindon BID, who's vision and drive to make these projects happen is helping slowly transform our town and inspire creativity from all who live here.”
