Swindon Railway Village Heritage Action Zone

18 November 2019

You may have heard that Historic England has declared the area around Swindon’s Railway Village to be a Heritage Action Zone. This five year initiative will bring much needed funding (£1.6million) and expertise to support the Council and other local organisations to revitalise the area through:

  • Refurbishments of key community buildings and spaces such as the Carriage Works, the Health Hydro, the Cricketer’s, GWR Park and the Mechanic’s Institution
  • Improvements to public spaces, footpaths and signage in order to encourage pedestrians into the area.
  • The development of a brand based on Swindon’s railway heritage
  • Raising awareness and promoting the area through publications, tours, exhibitions and other cultural events.
  • A key project to look out for in the New Year will be the Review of the Railway Works and Railway Village Conservation Areas.

There will be many opportunities for local people to get involved. If you would like to find out more, please contact the Heritage Action Zone project officer Karen Phimister at kphimister@swindon.gov.uk.
