Pirates invade town centre for three day festival

Timbers have shivered and swashes were buckled as crowds of landlubbers enjoyed FREE activities and entertainment at the town centre Pirate Fest.

The greatest villain of all time, the famous Captain Hook hosted live music, children activities and shows from the Jolly Roger pirate ship docked on Wharf Green. Little Pirates competed in a fancy dress competition, and dozens lined up to meet Captain Jack Sparrow in the Brunel Shopping Centre.

Mayor Maureen Penny said: “It’s a great idea to have this theme in Swindon, it’s good for children, parents, businesses, everyone.

“It was really buzzing on Wharf Green with lots of kids dancing, I was drawn by the caricaturist, and there’s a wonderful Jack Sparrow.”

Buccaneers, Pirates, Smee, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and the Crocodile were all around the town centre to surprise Visitors and the Creation Station ran pirate-themed crafts.

The Parade Shopping Centre ran the pieces-of-eight competition with prizes donated by town centre businesses. The prizes included Regent Circus Cineworld cinema tickets, Thornton’s chocolates, Nando’s sauces, and Foot Asylum vouchers.

Creative kids crafted pirate hats, treasure chests, swords and ships out of the card, paper, sticky tape and gems.

Chief Executive of inSwindon BID Di  Powell Said: "I am very pleased with the response to the festival. The three-day event went fantastically well, it’s been fabulous.”

Holly Mills said: "It was an awesome day, my son loved meeting Jack Sparrow and having fun on the Pirate ship with Captain Hook and Smee, much better than we imagined and well done to everyone involved".

The event is a collaboration between inSwindon Business Improvement District, The Brunel Shopping Centre, Regent Circus, and the Parade Shopping Centre.
